Engine Knowledge | How to Maintain the Oil and Oil Filter of 6TD Unit Pump Series Engine of Guangxi Yuchai Marine and Genset Power Co., Ltd.

6TD Unit Pump Engine of Guangxi Yuchai Marine and Genset Power Co., Ltd.

I. Maintenance of Oil and Oil Filter

The selection of engine oil and the maintenance of engine oil filter seem to be easy, but are really much learning. Any misoperation will have a great impact on the service life of the engine.

II. Selection of Oil

Suitable oil viscosity shall be selected based on different ambient temperatures. Too high oil viscosity will cause power loss, while too low oil viscosity will lead to insufficient lubrication and increase power loss and shorten the service life of the engine. Hanhu CI-4 oil for diesel genset of Yuchai-Petronas Lube is recommended.

III. Selection of Lubricating Oil in Cold Weather

When starting and operating the engine at an ambient temperature lower than -20℃ (-4℉), please use the lubricating oil with viscosity grade of SAE 0W or SAE 5W. When starting and operating the engine at an ambient temperature lower than -30°C (-22°F), please use the synthetic-based multi-stage lubricating oil with viscosity grade of 0W and 5W and with condensation point lower than -50°C (-58°F).

The lubricating oil recommended by Yuchai in cold weather is API CI-4 lubricating oil with viscosity grade of SAE 0W20, SAE 0W30 or SAE 5W40.

IV. Maintenance of Oil Filter

Please change the oil and the oil filter element in case of the following conditions:

The new or overhauled engine has been run for a total of 100 hours;

The oil and the oil filter element have not been changed for more than 1 year;

Every 500 hours of engine operation, that is, the maintenance interval is 500 hours.

When the engine is cold, the oil temperature is low, and suspended waste particles will settle to the bottom of the oil pan, and cannot be discharged along with the cold oil. For this reason, oil shall be drained when it is still warm. In this way, suspended waste particles can be completely removed along with the oil.

1. Drain the engine oil

1) After the engine runs at normal working temperature, stop the engine;

2) Put a proper container under the oil pan. Remove the oil drain plug from the bottom on one side of the oil pan, as shown in the figure below. After draining the oil, reinstall the oil drain plug and tighten it.

2. Replace the engine oil filter

1) Clean the area around the oil filter;

2) Put a drip tray under the oil filter and bypass oil filter;

3) Remove the oil filter and bypass oil filter with a filter wrench;

4) Thoroughly remove the oil on the support and mounting surface of the oil filter with a cloth;

5) Check the new oil filter and confirm whether the sealing ring is intact;

6) Fill clean oil into the new filter element until the oil level is close to the sealing gasket;

7) Install the oil filter onto the filter bracket. When the sealing ring of the filter element contacts the mounting surface, rotate the oil filter by 3/4~1 turn.

3. Fill fresh oil into the crankcase (for oil 6TD series, oil filling capacity: 52L):

1) Remove the oil filler cap;

2) Add oil to the crankcase to the designated level through the oil filler;

3) Check the oil level according to the following steps:

① Pull out the oil dipstick and clean it with a cloth;

② Fully insert the oil dipstick into the bushing and then pull it out;

③ Suitable oil level shall be at the range between 1/2 of the scale on the oil level indicator and the upper limit. If the oil level exceeds the upper limit mark, open the oil drain valve to discharge part of the oil; if the oil level is below the lower limit mark, continue adding oil;

4) Clean the oil filler cap and install it;

5) Check the oil pan and other parts for oil leakage. If yes, repair it in time;

6) Start the engine and let it run at idle speed for 3~5 min.
